Handling the digital camera - Photograpy Lesson

After good lighting nd strong composition, The nest stage n capturing the image that u want 2 get your 3 do what u want it 2 do-nd 2 do it well. The following tips will enable u 2 be master of ur camera.

- Get 2 know ur camera
whether it's a point-nd-shot or hi-spec DSLR, get 2 know how ur camera works. Become intimately familiar with the position of dials 4 everyday functions, zoom nd lens control, focusing, changing lens, setting exposure, WB and ISOE settings, so that operating them becomes second nature. Doing so will make sure u never miss those once n a lifetime candid moments.

- Using the viewfinder
Hold the camera close 2 ur eye nd set the image so that ur subject s where u want it within the frame. Then scan the whole area of the viewfinder 2 check 2 unsightly subjects, such as an electrical pylon, trash, or a tree apparently sprouting from the top of ur subject's head. Only when u're satisfied everything s jst right should u take the picture.

- LCD viewfinder
Avoid camera that only hav an LCD screen 2 compose ur picture. They r difficult 2 use 4 precise framing; the image appears very jumpy. nd they use a lot of battery power. If u do use the LCD screen, use the camera with a tripod.

- Batteries
Always carry a spare set of batteries. There's nothing worse than finding a great composition with superb lighting only 4 ur camera 2 pack up bcoz ur batteries hav died. In very cold weather, keep a set of spare batteries n an inside pocket so that ur body heat will keep them warm nd fully operational.

- Camera Shake
Camera shake, caused when the camera s moved as the picture s taken, shows on the resulting image so soft edges nd blur. Avoid it by setting a fast shutter speed or, preferably, using a solid camera support, such as a tripod.

- Handholding
When handholding the camera, first make sure u r comfortable nd hold tha camera with ur arms tight in 2 ur body 4 the best support. If possible (i.e. if ur composition allows), keep ur center of gravity low by kneeling down or by lying on the ground. when standing, keep ur feet slightly apart.

- Using supports
If there r any natural supports around, such as a tree, wall, fence, or post, then use them to help steady the camera while u r taking the picture.

- Pressing the shutter
Before u press the shutter, take a deep breath nd take the picture as ur breathing out, when ur body s at its most relaxed. Doing this will help 2 avoid jolting the camera, which may coz camera shake.

- Using a tripod
ideally, use a tripod. While this isn't always possible, it can be essential 2 some areas of photography, such as low light nd landscapes. As with handholding the camera, keep the tripod's center of gravity low by extending the legs 2 jst the minimum acceptable length required 2 get ur shot. Never extend the center column unless absolutely necessary, as this s the weakest part of the tripod.

- Balancing the camera
with long lenses, the camera will become unbalanced if the tripod s attached in the usual way to the camera's base. Most long lenses hav a tripod collar that allows u 2 attach the lens 2 the tripod head, making 4 a more stable support.

- Weighting the tripod
In windy conditions, particularly with lightweight tripods, it s a good idea 2 weight the tripod down by handing a heavy bag from the unextended center column. Some tripod hav a special hook nd custom bag 4 exactly this purpose. The advantage s a much steadier tripod nd better image quality.

- Self-timer option
If u dnt hav a remote shutter release then 1 option s 2 use the camera's self-timer function. Set the camera on the tripod nd compose the picture. Then set the self-timer nd fire the shutter n the normal way, remembering 2 remove ur finger from the shutter release after doing so. When the timer goes off the shutter will activate nd, hey presto, blur free images.

- Remote shutter release
When u use the camera with a tripod u should, ideally, trigger the shutter with a remote release. This stops the pressure of ur finger on the shutter release button from jolting the camera.

- Mirror lock-up
4 landscapes nd static subjects it's wise 2 use the camera's mirror lock-up function. This s usually activated via the menu options nd will flip the mirror up out of the way of the shutter curtain before activating the shutter release. This helps 2 minimize any camera shake coz by vibration when the mirror moves. (This tip s relevant only 2 DSLRs, as compact camera hav no reflex mirror).

- Leading the eye
what u r trying 2 achieve with good composition s a combination of balanced elements that lead the viewer from 1 part of the picture to another n an organized fashion.

- Format
Digital cameras hav 2 formats: vertical nd horizontal. If u hold the in its normal position, the horizontal format applies. Holding the camera on its end will give u a vertical composition. The format u choose 2 use will alter the emphasis of the photograph.

- Horizontal
The horizontal format s sometime referred 2 as the "landscape" format bcoz it s very well suited 2 landscape subjects. Holding the camera n the horizontal format will emphasize width nd space.

- Vertical
The vertical format s also known as the "portrait" format bcoz photographs of people often look better when shot this way. Holding the camera n the vertical format will emphasize height.

- 2 for the price of 1
Take each picture n both horizontal nd vertical formats. U can then decide which u prefer when u later come 2 process ur images.

- Subject position
Once u've decided on the most appropriate format. u'll need 2 choose where u place the main subject in the photograph. Nd, once again, ur decision will determine the emotional impact of the picture.

- Edge of frame
Avoid positioning the subject too close 2 the edge of the frame bcoz it can make the picture appear unbalanced nd poorly composed.

- Rule of thirds
This s a well-known photographic technique that really works. The principle s 2 divide up the picture frame by drawing imaginary lines at one-third interval, horizontally nd vertically across it. The focal point of the image should fall where lines intersect. This creates an asymmetric design that produces tensions nd relationships between the pictorial elements, giving a more dynamic nd visually energetic structure.

- Symmetry nd asymmetry
Symmetry nd asymmetry will dictate the visual weight of ur pictures. A balanced (symmetrical) picture tends 2 create a sense of tranquility nd/or stability, while an unbalanced (asymmetrical) image appears more dynamic.

- Center
Positioning the subject in the middle of the picture space will hold ur gaze on the center, which s entirely appropriate if what's there s the most interesting nd important part of the picture.

- Using lines
Straight horizontal lines provide a sense of wellbeing nd calm bcoz we associate them with our natural point of orientation-the horizon. Vertical lines accentuate hight nd diagonal lines create visual energy.

- Spirals
Composing picture elements so that they spiral out from a central point will produce visually energetic photographs, even if the subject s static.

- Direction of vision
In the West we read from left 2 right nd from top 2 bottom. Following this (2 us) natural orientation when designing a picture will produce a more aesthetically pleasing result.

- Triangles
Triangles make us thinks of stability nd permanence. They r also symbolic of mystical power, as denoted by Egyptian pyramids nd by mountains such as Everest nd Fuji. Pointing upward, Triangles always imply strength, although the opposite s true when they point down.

- Perspective
Perspective helps 2 define the way we c a photograph. There will be no big surprises n a picture taken from a normal standing position, while altering ur position-getting low down or up high, 4 example- helps 2 create visual effects that jar the sense of normality nd communicate a view of the world that others rarely consider.

- A sense of place
Including background nd/or foreground features will give ur subjects a sense of place, relating them to their surroundings.

- Depth
Photographs r two-dimensional images of a three-dimensional world, so u need 2 arrange the picture elements 2 give the illusion of depth, u can use contrast nd well-defined shadows, or converging lines, such as roads, pathways nd railway tracks. Alternatively, include foreground, middle ground, nd background.

- Patterns
Look 4 pictures within pictures. Patterns, from a rhythmic repetition of shapes, nd texture will both create abstract designs nd give ur photographs a tactile quality.

- Isolation
If u want 2 place all the emphasis on the subject, then u will need 2 isolate it from its surroundings, either by using a very shallow depth-of-field or by cropping n tightly to eliminate background nd foreground features.

- Cropping
DPSs r a particular size nd will capture light over their entire surface. However, this size frame may nt be ideal 2 the image u r trying 2 create. Never be afraid 2 frame the subject with cropping @ a later date n mind. 4 example, some landscape r better suited 2 a panoramic format nd portraits of people often look better as a square format.

- Framing
A well-known compositional technique s 2 frame the main subject with the picture. U can use naturally occurring objects such as the outward arc of a tree branch, or props such as a window frame. Using frames n this way will focus attention on the subject nd hint @ a wider sense of place.

- Making a statement
Photography s a form of graphic storytelling. Giving some thought 2 the story u want ur pictures 2 communicate before taking them s a professional technique that leads 2 consistently better photographs. Humor, happiness, sadness, thoughtfulness, danger, action, interaction, cutesy behavior nd a sense of place r example of different "stories" ur pictures may tell. Try to capture the emotion of the moment n ur picture.

LENSES ND COMPOSITION
------------------------------------

- Focal length
Changing the focal length of the lens, either by changing lenses of by altering the zoom setting, will also change the way re relate 2 the objects with a picture. In 35mm equivalency, a 50mm lent (around 75mm in digital terms) give a familiar perspective.

- Wide-angle lenses
Wide-angle lenses will reduce the size of the main subject nd give the optical illusion of expanding the distance between objects. They tend 2 create a greater sense of space nd depth-nd so r good 4 landscape photography.

- Telephoto lenses
Telephoto lenses increase the size of the main subject nd compress the space between foreground nd background. They r ideal 4 portraits (where the background s often secondary) nd wildlife of sports subjects (where it s difficult to get close enough 4 frame filling images).


COLOR
-------------
Colors hav a strong influence n photography. Used 2gether, they can either add 2, or subtract from, the compositional strength of the picture.

- Primary nd pastel colors
The strong primary colors-red, blue, nd yellow-grab attention nd r what u c first n the photograph. If they r nt the main subject feature, then will lead eye away from the main point of the photograph. Pastel colors r calming nd set a mood tranquility.

- Complementary Colors
Some colors work better 2gether than others. Red nd green (which r complementary colors) put 2gether hav a physical effect that helps 2 achieve visual energy nd three-dimensional form. Other color pairings that work well r blue nd orange, nd yellow nd violet.

All the equipment in the world won't help u take great pictures without good photographic technique. Here, we demystify some of the secrets of photography nd give a guide 2 simple techniques of using light, composing the picture, nd sond fieldcraft.

Using Light
Photographers talk about "good" lighting nd waiting 4 the "right" light. Bt what exactly s meant by these terms? Learning how 2 use light well can be tricky. Here r top tips 4 greate photographic lighting.

- Color of light:
Depending on the time of day, weather conditions, nd whether it comes from a natural or artifical source, the color of light changes. The human eye may not notice these changes, bt cameras do.

- Color temperature:
We think of light as being either cool (i.e. blue in tone) or warm (red or orange). In general, pictures look better when the color temperature of light s warm. This s y photographers refer 2 the hours around sunset nd sunrise as the "golden hours".

- Contrast:
When we look @ a scene our eyes automatically compensate 4 different levels of brightness nd we can c detail with a high degree of latitude. The camera, on the other hand, can't record detail in the same range of highlights nd shadows, so n a high contrast scene it may struggle 2 capture the same detail that u can c.

- Reducing contrast:
On a bright, sunny day u can soften hard, contrast-rich lighting by placing a diffuser between the sun nd ur subject (c illustration opposite, right). This will hav the same effect as if the weather conditions were overcast.

- Controling color temperature:
U can change how the camera records the color of the light by adjusting the camera's WB or by using color correction (CC) filters. Setting WB 2 the "cloudy" or "shade" setting, or adding an 81-series orange filter 2 the front of the lens will make ur pictures warmer n tone. 4 the opposite effect, set WB 2 "natural daylight" of "incandescent", or ure and 80-series blue filter.

- Lighting 4 landscapes:
Contrast-rich conditions r nevertheless considered better 4 landscape photography as the range of shadow nd highlight areas helps 2 create depth.

- Weather:
On cloudy days, the level of contrast n a scene s less than when the sun s shining. Other weather elements that reduce contrast r mist, haze, nd fog.

- Lighting 4 portraits:
Soft, diffused lighting, such as daylight on an overcast day or flash lighting directed through a soft box or umbrella or bounced from a light surface, s generally considered the best type of lighting 4 portrait photographs of people.

- Direction of light:
The direction from which light fails on a subject will dictate how surface details appears (weather relatively flat or textured) nd how nd where shadows fall (determining the sense of depth). U can exploit this 4 artistic effect, creating silhouettes or beautiful golden "halos" around people or animals.

- Sidelighting:
Light falling from the side, relative 2 the subject, will help give ur pictures a strongly three dimensional appearance. Slidelighting accentuates shadows, nd this helps 2 create depth.

- Texture:
Bcoz sidelighting creates contrast, it s the best lighting 4 accentuating surface texture n material such as the bark of a tree or the pattrens on leaves.

- Frontlighting:
Frontlighting s generally considered 2 be poor n quality as it produces very flat pictures lacking n contrast nd shadow.

- Backlighting:
Although u r often advised against photographing into the sun, lighting from behind the subject can produce very strong graphic images. Use it 2 create silhouettes nd rim-light effects.

- Seasons:
During late fail, through winter, nd into early spring the sun s never fully overhead nd light falls on the land from the side. N summer, on the other hand, the sun rises more quickly nd far higher n the sky.

- Season for landscapes:
Winter s often considered the ideal season 4 outdoor photography bcoz the sun s @ a low angle, creating lighting conditions that that r perfect 4 emphasizing form, texture, nd depth.

- Coping with reflections:
2 remove reflectons from shiny nonmetallic surfaces such as water nd glass, use a polarizing filter.
